Starting a new Motor Carrier or Brokerage? Getting your USDOT Number is the first step—and we’re here to help make it simple.

A USDOT Number is essential for:

  • Commercial vehicles transporting passengers or cargo across state lines (interstate commerce) or those required to register with the FMCSA.

  • Intrastate carriers hauling hazardous materials in quantities that require a safety permit.

Do You Need a USDOT Number?

You must obtain a USDOT Number if your vehicle meets any of the following criteria:

  • Transports hazardous materials requiring a safety permit in intrastate commerce (see 49 CFR 385.403).

  • Has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) or combination weight rating of 10,001 pounds (4,536 kg) or more.

  • Is designed to carry more than 8 passengers (including the driver) for compensation.

  • Is designed to transport more than 15 passengers (including the driver), whether or not for compensation.

This requirement applies to trade, traffic, or transportation:

  • Between a location in one state and a location outside that state (including outside the U.S.).

  • Between two locations within a state but passing through another state or outside the U.S.

  • Within a state, as part of a broader trade or transport that starts or ends outside the state or U.S.
